CIC Data Issues Task Force Receives ASA & SCRS Collision Industry Award

At the Collision Industry Night of Achievement, held November 28, 2001, at Bally's Hotel in Las Vegas, Jim Keller, chairman of the Automotive Service Association (ASA), and Don Keenan, chairman of Society of Collision Repair Specialists (SCRS), took the stage to present their associations' first annual “Collision Industry Award”. The recipient this year was the Collision Industry Conference (CIC) Data Task Force. Chairman Jim Laning, State Farm Insurance, accepted the award on behalf of the Task Force.

The Task Force, which is composed of people from all segments of the industry, Keenan explained, “worked together to discuss, debate, formulate, and articulate the issues surrounding the encrypting of data and its negative impact on the industry. After much hard work and determination, the committee successfully halted the encryption issue.”

The CIC Data Issues Task Force was formed to review and access licensing requirements, data transmission restrictions, and other activities to determine the best means of preserving open communication standards while maintaining security and privacy for the collision industry and its customers.

Says Laning, "In assessing the security measures (encryption of data) proposed by the information providers in December 2000, we reviewed several areas: where to secure; what to secure; how to secure; restrictions on data transfer services; issues relating to securing in the estimating application; and appropriate use of data. After reviewing these areas, the information providers announced in April 2001 that they supported an open environment; had no plans to encrypt output files; supported opening the EMS extract for estimating customers; and supported appropriate data security measures to protect their clients and preserve the integrity of e-commerce."

The Task Force has also been addressing the OEM issues involved: dramatic price increases for data; concerns regarding restriction of OEM data being transmitted over the Internet; and restrictions regarding OEM parts information used in conjunction with non-OEM parts. They hope to conclude this aspect of their work in the near future.

As a result of the work completed by the CIC Data Issues Task Force, CIECA (Collision Industry Electronic Commerce Association) formed the Internet Security Subcommittee to define requirements and identify best practices to ensure secure electronic communications within the industry.

The “Collision Industry Award” will be presented annually by ASA and SCRS to the group, committee, association, or company that made the most significant contribution that helped change or shape the collision repair industry in a positive manner.
